President Droupadi Murmu expressed her heartfelt condolences on Thursday following the passing of Ratan Tata, Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons. Tata, a visionary leader in Indian business and philanthropy, passed away on Wednesday evening at Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai.

In a tribute shared on X, President Murmu honored Tata's legacy, stating, "In the sad demise of Ratan Tata, India has lost an icon who blended corporate growth with nation-building, and excellence with ethics." She further highlighted his invaluable contributions to philanthropy and charity, calling them a significant part of his lasting impact.

"A recipient of the Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan, he took forward the great Tata legacy and gave it a more impressive global presence. He inspired seasoned professionals and young students alike," she added.

President Murmu extended her condolences to Tata's family, the Tata Group, and his admirers worldwide.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also mourned Tata’s passing, sharing his grief in a post on X. "Ratan Tata Ji was a visionary business leader, a compassionate soul, and an extraordinary human being," Modi wrote. He acknowledged Tata's profound influence beyond the corporate world, emphasizing his humility, kindness, and unwavering commitment to social betterment.

"Extremely pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and admirers. Om Shanti," the Prime Minister added.

Ratan Tata, born on December 28, 1937, was a towering figure in Indian business, leading Tata Sons from 1991 until his retirement in 2012. He also chaired the Ratan Tata Trust and Dorabji Tata Trust, two of India's largest philanthropic organizations. Tata was honored with the country's second-highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan, in 2008.
